How the estimate is calculated

No black box. Here is the whole formula and where each number comes from.

Step one — how many nearby searches turn into visits. Roughly 76% of people who run a local search on their phone visit a related business within 24 hours. That is the pool your rating competes for.

Step two — what share of that pool your rating can win back. This scales with how much room you have to improve. A business at or below 2 stars is modelled at 8%, tapering down through 6.5% at 3 stars, 5.5% at 3.5, 5% at 4, 4% at 4.5, and 3.5% above that. A strong rating is not worth less — it simply has less headroom left.

Step three — turn customers into revenue. Your weekly customer count multiplied by that capture rate and the 76% visit rate gives new customers per week. Multiply by your average sale for weekly revenue, then by four for a monthly figure, and subtract the $9/month StarFlywheel Lite plan to get net monthly gain.

These are population-level averages applied to your inputs, so the output is an order-of-magnitude estimate rather than a promise. Your margins, your competitors' ratings, and how consistently you actually ask will all move the real number.

What actually moves the number

The estimate assumes you close the gap between customers served and reviews collected. Three things do most of that work.

Ask every customer, not the memorable ones

The single biggest gap for most local businesses is coverage. A QR code on the counter, the invoice, or the receipt turns the ask into part of the transaction instead of an afterthought.

Ask while the visit is still fresh

Response rates fall off sharply with time. A follow-up that lands the same day — by SMS or email — converts far better than one sent a week later.

Reply to what arrives

Responding to reviews drives roughly 41% more engagement, and it is the cheapest signal you control. It also tells the next reader that someone is paying attention.
